Wedel's chocolate is over 150 years old!

Wedel's Shop in WarsawWedel is the oldest chocolate brand in Poland and at the same time it is one of the oldest Polish brands in general. Its history dates back to the 1st half of the 19th century. It all started when Karol Ernest Wedel, after years of learning and a long practice in Paris, Berlin and London, opened his own pastry shop in Warsaw. Chocolate products were his speciality. After a few years Wedel's sweets were already very popular and they were also ... copied.  The company was taken over in 1862 by Emil Wedel. He developed the chain of shops, introduced new products and extended the market. At that time a beautiful apartment building on Szpitalna Street in Warsaw was built. At the front side  of the builidng a shop and a drinking chocolate house were opened, and a modern chocolate factory was built behind it. In 1934 that factory was closed and replaced by a new one located on the other side of the Vistula River in Praga district. In 1946 the company was nationalized. It was owned by PepsiCo for a few years and eventually in 1999 was bought by the oldest British chcocolate company and became to be known as Cadbury Wedel, being part of Cadbury Schweppes. The flavour of Wedel's products remains the same. Emil Wedel's signature is a recognizible feature of the most popular chocolate products in Poland.
